Audi A3 Preview

The Audi’s A3 sedan is answer to Mercedes-Benz CLA and the BMW 1 Series sedan. The sedan was unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and made its Indian debut at the 2014 Auto Expo. It will slot in below the A4 as one of the entry-level models for the German marque. It has been spotted testing in India on multiple occasions in both the 1.8-litre TFSI petrol and 2.0-litre TDI diesel variants.

Exterior

At 4.46 metres, the A3 sedan is shorter than the A4 by full 0.3 metres. It has MQB underpinning like most other new models under the VW umbrella. The overall appearance is typical Audi and most design elements are similar to that of the A4 sedan and this includes lights, lines on the side and the stance of the car. Audi says that the new model is a cross between coupe and three-box design. Internationally the car is mainly sold as a hatchback but this model is not expected to be launched in the Indian market.

Interior

This sedan is smaller than the A4, so the space will also be relatively less. Its overall design is very close to the A4 but there are small elemental changes like the shape of the AC vents, pop-up digital display and the trim options.

The front seat space won’t be much of an issue, however, the rear is likely to be on the smaller end of the segment standard. The boot space, at 425 litres, will be sufficient for most occasions and is comparable to most of its rivals. The features list is expected to include Audi MMI and all the safety bits including ABS-EBS, ESP and airbags.

Engine and gearbox

The A3 sedan will be available in both petrol and diesel guise in India – the petrol version will be the 1.8-litre TFSI unit developing 177bhp and 250Nm, the oil burner is the 2.0-litre TDI mill with an output of 141bhp and 320Nm. Both the engines will power the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG gearbox.

Price and competition

The Audi A3 sedan is expected to be launched in August 2014. It is expected to be launched as a CKD directly and will compete with the BMW 1 Series and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

The all-new car Hyundai i30, was unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2011. The new looks of the i30 are quite appealing and attracted many auto enthusiasts to Hyundai's stall at the event. The Korean car manufacturer has not made any official declaration about the launch of i30 in India. If launched in India, i30 will attain the title of the most spacious hatchback in the country. The car is designed in Germany and equipped with intelligent technology, contemporary styling and innovative interiors. All these features together make the i30 a benchmark in its own segment. Along with brilliant technology, Hyundai i30 is packed with advanced safety arrangements that enable it to attain a five star ANCAP rating, the maximum offered by the company. Engine and Specification of Hyundai i30 Hyundai i30 is equipped with a powerful engine of 1.6 L capacity, which has a displacement of 1591 cc. The 16 valve twin overhead cam shafts engine is packed with Constantly Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) technology that enables the car to produce maximum power of 119 bhp at 6200 rpm. Moreover, the maximum torque attained by the engine of this car is 153 Nm at 4200 rpm. Such figures make it a powerhouse unto its own and distinguish from other hatchbacks available in the market today. Performance of Hyundai i30 Hyundai i30 will be available with a five speed manual transmission system with lift up gate reverse gear selection. The smooth and effective gear transmission leads to impressive acceleration and a fairly good ride. Moreover, the electric motor driven power assisted rack and pinion steering wheel will enable driver to enjoy complete control of the car. The vehicle delivers excellent fuel economy of around 12.1 kmpl in city and 18.5 kmpl on highways, which is quite appreciable for a hatchback. On the other hand, the new Hyundai i30 provides a cumulative fuel economy of 15.3 kmpl. The combined CO2 emission figures of this car stand at 155 g/km. The car is packed with independent MacPherson struts suspensions in the front, with coil springs and anti roll stabiliser bar. Moreover, the rear suspensions incorporate multi links with coil springs and anti roll stabiliser bar. In terms of braking, the car has disk brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear, giving total control of the vehicle in the hands of the driver. Interior, Exterior and Safety of Hyundai i30 The Hyundai i30 is packed with contemporary design and versatility throughout its exterior body. Exteriors of i30 are packed with elongated headlights and body coloured front bumper, which provide a classy look to the car. In addition, the wing mirrors will make the car an eye catcher on Indian roads. The equipped roof spoilers with mounted brake light, enlarged bumper, rear combination lights and rear washer nozzle adorn the back portion of Hyundai i30. The interiors of Hyundai i30 are equipped with comfortable seats that boast of lumbar support and padded structure. The blue illuminated instrument cluster, air conditioning, adjustable steering column, console containing audio and extensive boot capacity make the driving experience quite joyful. Certain safety features of Hyundai i30 help it to remain at par with other cars available in the market today. The dual diagonal split circuit, power assisted braking system allows the driver to stop the car at sudden without reducing the control over it. Other notable features of the car are four channel Anti skid Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Break-force Distribution (EBD) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The car also possesses the unique rear roof mounted centre stop lamp and day as well as night view mirrors.

Engine and gearbox

The CLA45 AMG is powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 360bhp and 460 Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the wheels via a seven-speed automatic dual clutch gearbox. Given that so much power was being squeezed out of such a small engine, AMG has made the car four-wheel drive using the three-pointed star’s patented 4matic drivetrain. It does 0-100kmph in 4.6 seconds and will go on to hit a limited top speed of 250kmph.
